Coachella Valley Swelters: Heatwave Meets Monsoon Threat
12 Jul
Summary
- Monsoon thunderstorms may reach nearby mountains with little chance for the valley.
- Overnight temperatures will remain abnormally high in the mid to upper 80s.
- Daytime temperatures are five degrees above normal, with humidity increasing heat.

The Coachella Valley is bracing for a week characterized by high humidity and persistent heat, with potential for monsoon thunderstorms. While storms are expected to rumble over nearby mountains, their arrival in the valley remains uncertain. Meteorologists indicate the highest probability for any valley storms is on Monday afternoon and early evening. Any storms that do reach the valley could bring brief, heavy rainfall and gusty winds, particularly if they are higher-based. The chance of rain in the valley on Monday is between 10% and 30%, decreasing to 5% to 10% on Tuesday and less than 10% on Wednesday, with a slight increase to 20% to 25% by Thursday and Friday. The predicted rainfall is expected to be light. Overnight low temperatures will be abnormally hot, staying in the mid to upper 80s, offering no significant cool-down. This lack of nighttime relief, combined with daytime temperatures five degrees above normal and about eight to 10 degrees above normal for nighttime lows, will make the heat feel more intense due to the humidity. The seven-day forecast for Palm Springs predicts highs soaring to 111 degrees Fahrenheit on Wednesday.
