Originally constructed as air raid shelters during World War II, these spaces have been repurposed for public welfare since 2002. The Chongqing National Defense Mobilization Office reports that the cooling centers span over 11,000 square meters and are fully equipped with essential amenities and safety staff.
As of July 8, 2026, the Chongqing Meteorological Bureau issued its first orange alert for high temperatures this summer. Forecasts indicate prolonged hot and dry weather from July 7 to August 31, with temperatures expected to be above the historical average.
