Storms Lash Asia: China Flooded, Japan Braces
25 Aug
Summary
- Over 15,000 evacuated in Chongzuo as floodwaters hit record highs.
- Typhoon Narra dumped heavy rain on China's Guangxi region.
- Typhoon Saudel approaches Japan and Taiwan with heavy rain warnings.

Widespread floods in southern China intensified on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, due to heavy rainfall from Typhoon Narra. In Chongzuo, Guangxi, authorities evacuated over 15,000 people as floodwaters reached record levels, surpassing those set in 2008. Rising waters prompted a total relocation of 54,000 people across Guangxi. Narra lingered over the Beibu Gulf, impacting Guangxi, Hainan, and Guangdong provinces.
Simultaneously, Typhoon Saudel was moving towards southern Japan and northern Taiwan. Japan's weather agency warned of destructive gusts and high seas around Okinawa. Taiwan's Central Weather Administration predicted Saudel would bring rain from late Thursday into Friday, though its intensity was expected to weaken. Separately, a tropical depression caused one death and four missing in southern and eastern Taiwan, with Kaohsiung receiving nearly a meter of rain from Sunday to Tuesday.
Typhoon Saudel is forecast to make landfall in China's Fujian province between late Thursday and early Friday. The intense rainfall in Kaohsiung exceeded levels seen during Typhoon Morakot in 2009, which caused significant casualties and damage.
