Arctic Blast Turns Cars to Ice Sculptures
13 Feb
Summary
- Vehicles in China were found encased in ice due to a sudden cold snap.
- A burst pipe nearby is believed to have caused the extensive freezing.
- Residents used household items to chip away ice from their cars.

Residents in Changchun, China, awoke to find their cars completely encased in ice following an unexpected arctic blast. The overnight temperature plummeted to -20°C, turning water from a burst pipe into a thick, translucent coating that sealed doors, bonnets, and boots shut. Tires were also effectively glued to the road. Many drivers had to resort to using everyday household utensils, such as hammers and kitchen knives, to free their vehicles on Sunday.
The extreme cold front has affected large parts of Asia, with Shanghai experiencing unusual snowfall and Russia dealing with record-breaking snow. Scientists attribute these widespread cold weather events to disruptions in the jet stream originating from the Arctic polar vortex. This has led to the closure of major roads across 12 Chinese provinces and significant transport disruptions regionally.
Meanwhile, other regions are also experiencing severe winter weather. In Changsha, a woman reported her helmet being frozen solid, preventing her from commuting. This significant temperature drop contrasts sharply with unusually warm weather experienced just the previous week, leading to discomfort and making travel conditions hazardous across affected areas.
