As of Thursday evening, a severe thunderstorm warning was active for parts of Central Texas, including Hays, Travis, Caldwell, and Bastrop counties. The storm, initially spotted near Bear Creek, was moving southeast and later east at a slow pace, impacting areas like Niederwald and Lockhart.
Forecasters reported that the storm produced damaging winds reaching 60 mph and hail approximately three-quarters of an inch in diameter. This severe weather prompted the National Weather Service to urge the public to move indoors immediately, emphasizing the dangers of large hail, damaging winds, and frequent lightning.
Several communities were within the warning zone, including San Marcos, Kyle, and Lockhart. Additionally, rainfall totals were significant in some areas, with one gauge on Barton Creek recording 0.6 inch in just 15 minutes. Residents were advised that lightning is a leading killer and to seek shelter if thunder is audible.
