Much of Canada experienced a drastic shift in weather after Christmas, with widespread treacherous conditions. Central Yukon battled an Arctic ridge, facing extreme wind chill values between -50 and -55 C, with the potential for rolling blackouts. Although temperatures were expected to improve, the deep freeze remained a significant concern.
Newfoundland and Labrador were particularly hard-hit, with winter storm warnings issued for several areas. Heavy snowfall, estimated at 30 to 50 cm, combined with strong northerly winds reaching 110 to 120 km/h, created blizzard-like conditions. Residents were strongly advised to avoid non-essential travel and outdoor activities.
Ontario also saw significant winter weather, primarily heavy fog in southern and southwestern regions, along with the Niagara Region. Waterloo and Guelph anticipated five to eight centimetres of snowfall mixed with ice pellets and freezing rain. The Greater Toronto Area experienced substantial snowfall, leading to challenging travel and reduced visibility, with accumulations of eight to 12 centimetres expected.
