10 Mar
Summary
- Temperatures are predicted to exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit across California.
- Millions face moderate to major heat risk on Thursday and Friday.
- Vulnerable residents and health systems are at increased risk from the heat.

California is experiencing an unusual winter heat wave, with temperatures expected to surpass 90 degrees Fahrenheit in many areas this week. Forecasters predict highs of up to 97F in Burbank and 98F in the Coachella Valley on Thursday.
This surge in heat poses a moderate to major risk to an estimated 17.2 million people across southern California on Thursday and Friday. Individuals sensitive to heat, those without adequate cooling and hydration, and critical infrastructure like health systems and businesses are particularly vulnerable.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has advised residents to take precautions, including canceling or rescheduling outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day. On Wednesday, areas like Death Valley were forecast to reach 84F, with Los Angeles around 70F, but conditions are rapidly intensifying.
By Friday, Los Angeles is expected to reach 96F, with Anaheim and Burbank hitting 97F. These high temperatures are forecast to persist through the weekend, potentially exceeding 100F in places like Palm Springs and Thermal. The NWS emphasized that inadequate cooling can make living spaces deadly during the peak heat.
