California sizzles: Heatwave to hit dangerous highs this weekend

Northern California is set to experience its most intense heatwave of the year this weekend, with weather models predicting dangerous conditions. The Sacramento Valley is particularly vulnerable, with temperatures expected to soar between 106 and 112 degrees Fahrenheit from Friday through Sunday. Saturday is anticipated to be the hottest day, with Sacramento potentially nearing 110 degrees, a level not seen frequently since the 1940s.

Overnight temperatures will offer little respite, with lows remaining in the 60s and 70s across much of the interior. Some foothill communities could see overnight lows near 80 degrees. This sustained heat, combined with high daytime temperatures, significantly elevates the risk of heat-related illnesses. Coastal areas, however, are expected to experience cooler conditions due to sea breezes, with San Francisco potentially staying in the 60s.

The extreme heat is attributed to a large high-pressure system dominating the Western United States. This system is forecast to strengthen and center over the Nevada-Utah border by Friday, extending its influence widely. While this forecast is highly confident, wildfire smoke could potentially suppress temperatures and worsen air quality if new fires emerge.
