California Braces For Record-Breaking El Niño Storms

California has declared a state of emergency to mobilize state resources ahead of an anticipated historic El Niño storm season. Governor Gavin Newsom stated the early preparation ensures residents' safety and community protection during severe weather. State agencies are directing flood-risk reduction efforts, staging sandbags and pumps, and pre-positioning critical equipment.

The California National Guard is prepared to support flood response and rescue missions. Environmental agencies are expediting permits to cut red tape for local flood and landslide preparations. This proactive approach comes as the emerging El Niño is already breaking records and is expected to continue strengthening.

Forecasters predict a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event this fall and winter, with a 75% chance it could reach historic strength. This means much of California could experience repeated rounds of heavy rain, strong winds, mountain snow, flooding, landslides, debris flows, large waves, and coastal flooding. Some impacts have already been observed, with rough surf threatening oceanfront homes and causing evacuations in Long Beach, and coastal erosion posing risks in Carlsbad.
