The National Weather Service (NWS) in Indianapolis stated the warning indicated a heightened risk of destructive winds and life-threatening conditions. This alert remained in effect for parts of Monroe County until 7:30 pm EST.
An estimated 136,000 residents were located within the zone, which also encompassed 25 schools and three hospitals. Officials emphasized the severe danger, advising, "This is a life-threatening situation. Seek shelter now!"
