Bins Cascade Down Brighton Streets as Torrential Rains Batter UK

On October 21st, 2025, the UK has been battered by torrential rains, with videos showing a procession of wheelie bins flowing down the streets of Brighton as their contents spilled out amid the torrents of water. This flooding occurred despite the lack of any weather warnings in the country the previous day, with only Northern Ireland under a rain alert over the weekend.

However, the situation is set to worsen in the coming days. The Met Office expects a deep area of low pressure to affect southern and eastern England from tomorrow night into Thursday, bringing strong gusts and heavy rain. Forecasters are considering issuing severe weather warnings before the system moves quickly along the south of the UK, with thunderstorms also possible.

The unsettled conditions are expected to become more widespread across the UK on Thursday, with up to 1.6 inches (40mm) of rain possible over 12 hours in southern counties. The strong winds are then forecast to become focused on the east coast of England and Scotland on Friday as the low-pressure area moves away to the east.

This will also allow cooler, arctic maritime air originating from the Arctic Ocean to spill southwards across the UK, bringing a noticeable chill by the weekend. Temperatures are expected to plummet, with some areas potentially waking up to frosts and the possibility of wintry showers over the tops of the Scottish mountains.
