Bhakra Dam Reservoir Nears Capacity as Rainfall Continues Unabated
24 Aug
Summary
- Bhakra Dam reservoir water level at 1,667.20 feet, just 12.80 feet below capacity
- BBMB releasing 7,000 cusecs of surplus water to prevent dam from overflowing
- Water level 32 feet higher than same time last year, raising flood concerns

As of August 25, 2025, the Bhakra Dam reservoir in India is facing a critical situation due to the incessant rainfall in its catchment area. The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has decided to maintain the water level of the reservoir at 1,667.20 feet, despite having 12.80 feet of space left before reaching the maximum capacity.
To prevent the dam from overflowing, the BBMB has been releasing 7,000 cusecs of surplus water from the floodgates on top of the dam. This release of water began on August 19, 2025, and is expected to continue as the reservoir continues to receive 48,000 cusecs of water. The BBMB officials are closely monitoring the situation, as the water level is currently 32 feet higher than the same time last year, raising concerns about potential flooding.
According to the BBMB, the heavy rainfall in the region is expected to continue until September 20, 2025, and the partner states have agreed in the technical committee meeting to release water for the safety of the dam. The BBMB is taking a cautious approach, as they do not want to take any chances with the safety of the dam and the surrounding areas.
