South Bengal Weather Alert: Mercury to Rise, Cold Snap Ends
18 Jan
Summary
- Temperatures across South Bengal to rise by 2-3°C in 48 hours.
- Scattered rain possible next week as temperatures continue to climb.
- Thick fog expected to persist in several districts for two days.

Following a period of below-normal temperatures in early January, weather forecasts indicate a significant warming trend across South Bengal. The Alipore Regional Meteorological Centre predicts a rise of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in Kolkata and surrounding areas within the next 48 hours, with an additional 2-degree increase expected after Tuesday. This warming may prevent a recurrence of the recent shivering cold during Saraswati Puja on January 23.
Despite the anticipated temperature rise, the weather office notes the possibility of scattered rainfall between January 23rd and 29th. During this period, minimum temperatures could climb another 2 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, areas like Darjeeling recorded a minimum of 3.5 degrees Celsius, and Shantiniketan, Bankura, and Kalyani experienced temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius on Saturday.
Residents in several districts of North and South Bengal should prepare for persistent thick fog on Sunday and Monday, with alerts issued for Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia, and West Burdwan. Lighter fog may affect Hooghly, East Burdwan, and North 24 Parganas. These temperature fluctuations are attributed by the Alipore Met Office to consecutive western disturbances impacting the region.
