Arizona Braces for Monsoon Fury: Storms Unleash Threat Across State

Monsoon storms are making a forceful return to Arizona, with widespread thunderstorms forecasted from Saturday, August 29, through Monday, August 31. Atmospheric conditions are ripe for convective energy and ample moisture, creating multiple storm opportunities across the state. Activity began Saturday afternoon, particularly in high country and southeastern areas, but is expected to impact the entire state.

Threats include heavy rainfall, severe winds, blowing dust, frequent lightning, and small hail. A flood watch is in effect for central Arizona around Phoenix through Sunday morning, anticipating rainfall rates up to 1.5 inches per hour. Similar watches are in place for northern and southeastern regions. Strong winds could cause blowing dust south of Phoenix on Saturday.

Rainfall totals are expected to range from a quarter-inch to over an inch in metro Phoenix, with higher isolated amounts possible. Yavapai County and southern Pima and Santa Cruz counties could see over two inches of rain. Both Saturday and Sunday are projected to be highly active weather days. By Monday, drier air may begin to reduce storm chances in western areas while maintaining them eastward.

Temperatures throughout this period are expected to fall to, or even below, average for the week ahead, with highs ranging from the upper 90s to 107 degrees.
