Arizona Monsoon Shatters Flash Flood Warning Records
8 Oct
Summary
- National Weather Service issued a record 246 flash flood warnings.
- Monsoon season brought near to above-normal rainfall across the region.
- Southern Arizona may experience a wetter winter due to hurricane season.

The recent monsoon season in southern Arizona proved to be exceptionally active, culminating in a record number of flash flood warnings. Between July and September, the National Weather Service issued an unprecedented 246 such alerts, a figure not seen in data going back to the 1980s.
While the monsoon season concluded, its impact was significant. Many areas in the region received near to above-normal rainfall, although precipitation varied greatly. Tucson, for instance, saw diverse amounts, from 3 inches in midtown to over 15 inches in some locations. The season also brought unusually high humidity levels and elevated dew points.
Looking forward, experts predict a potentially wetter-than-normal winter for southern Arizona. This forecast is partly influenced by an unusually active hurricane season occurring in the Pacific Ocean. Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to remain aware of these conditions.
