Arctic Blast to Slam Midwest & Northeast with Brutal Cold

A potent Arctic blast is poised to deliver dangerously cold temperatures across the Midwest and Northeast regions of the United States, marking a stark transition from a potentially record-warm Christmas. As 2025 ends and 2026 begins, forecasters anticipate a significant drop in temperatures, accompanied by widespread lake-effect snow. This shift is expected to bring bitter conditions to areas including Pennsylvania, Ohio, and the Great Lakes states.

The recent severe winter storm, which impacted the Great Lakes and Northeast, caused widespread travel disruptions. As of early Saturday, more than 1,700 flights experienced delays or cancellations nationwide, with major airports in New York and Boston being heavily affected. Additionally, ice accumulation led to power outages for over 30,000 homes and businesses in Michigan.

Extreme cold warnings are in effect for parts of the northern U.S., with Montana anticipating wind chills as low as minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit, posing a risk of frostbite on exposed skin within minutes. Residents in affected areas are advised to dress in multiple layers, including protective headwear and gloves, if venturing outdoors. Winter storm watches and warnings are active across Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.
