Ukraine Hacks into Russia's Newest Nuclear Submarine, Exposing Vulnerabilities
4 Aug
Summary
- Ukraine steals classified data on Russia's newest nuclear missile submarine
- Obtained details on crew, layout, and survivability systems of the Knyaz Pozharsky
- Breach could be a setback for the Russian Navy and expose limitations of the Borei-class subs

In a recent intelligence operation, Ukraine's military agency HUR has breached the Russian Navy and obtained classified information on the country's newest nuclear missile submarine, the Knyaz Pozharsky. The Knyaz Pozharsky, a Project 955A-class vessel, entered service less than two weeks ago on July 24, 2025.
The HUR specialists were able to access a trove of sensitive data, including details about the submarine's crew, such as their positions, fitness levels, and combat instructions. They also obtained diagrams and engineering documents related to the vessel's layout and survivability systems.
The breach could be a significant setback for the Russian Navy, as the information obtained by Ukraine's intelligence agency could expose vulnerabilities within the Project 955A-class submarines. These stealthy, nuclear-powered boats are a crucial element of Russia's nuclear triad, alongside its ground- and air-launched missiles.
The HUR stated that the intelligence gathered "allows identifying the features and technical limitations not only of the 'Knyaz Pozharsky' but also of other submarines of Project 955A, critically important for maintaining the imperial myth of the aggressor state Russia."
The Knyaz Pozharsky is one of five improved Project 955A "Borei-A" class submarines operated by the Russian Navy, which has an estimated 64 active vessels in its fleet. These submarines can carry up to 16 RSM-56 Bulava submarine-launched ballistic missiles, each equipped with nuclear warheads.
