6 Aug
Summary
- Russian and Chinese navies hold joint drills in Sea of Japan
- Navies form new task group for joint patrol missions in Asia-Pacific
- Exercises include live-fire training and anti-submarine operations
On August 6, 2025, it was reported that the Russian and Chinese navies will be conducting joint patrols in the Asia-Pacific region following recent exercises in the Sea of Japan. According to Interfax, the two navies held joint drills in the Sea of Japan over the past week, from August 1 to 5.
The exercises included a range of activities, such as artillery firing, practicing anti-submarine and air defense missions, and improving joint search and rescue operations at sea. During the final phase, Russian and Chinese warships carried out live-fire training drills and practiced searching for and neutralizing a mock enemy submarine.
The Pacific Fleet stated that the drills were defensive in nature and not directed against any other countries. Russia and China, who have a "no-limits" strategic partnership, regularly conduct such exercises to rehearse coordination between their armed forces and send a deterrent signal to adversaries.
The formation of a new joint task group to carry out patrols in the Asia-Pacific region underscores the deepening military cooperation between the two countries. This move is likely to be closely watched by other nations in the region as it reflects the growing geopolitical alignment between Russia and China.
