India Repatriates 70 Pakistani Nationals After Jail Terms

Summary
- India repatriates 70 Pakistani nationals who completed jail terms
- Most were fishermen, 19 from other backgrounds
- Repatriation comes 4 months after India's strikes on terror in Pakistan

On September 9, 2025, India has repatriated 70 Pakistani nationals who had been serving jail terms in various states across the country. The repatriation took place at the Attari-Wagah joint check post in Amritsar district.
According to official sources, the Pakistani nationals had illegally crossed into India and were being held in prisons in Punjab, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Telangana. Most of them were fishermen, while 19 were from other backgrounds. Some of the released prisoners were also serving terms in the Ludhiana and Amritsar jails.
The repatriation comes four months after India carried out targeted strikes on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025 that left 26 people, mostly tourists, dead. In the aftermath of the strikes, India had taken several steps, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, closing the integrated checkpost at Attari, and barring Pakistani nationals from traveling to India under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme.
This latest repatriation is seen as a significant development in the ongoing tensions between the two neighboring countries. The released prisoners were presented before the immigration and customs officials at the Attari-Wagah checkpost for verification formalities before being handed over to the Pakistan Rangers.
