Summary
- Zelenskyy worries an Iran war will reduce U.S. focus on Ukraine.
- Ukraine needs more Patriot missiles, but supply is strained.
- Russia benefits from higher oil prices due to Mideast conflict.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine fears that an extended U.S.-Iran conflict may divert global attention and resources away from Ukraine's defense needs. Speaking from Istanbul, he highlighted concerns that Washington's priorities might shift, impacting the delivery of crucial Patriot air defense missiles.
Ukraine urgently requires additional U.S.-made Patriot systems to defend against daily Russian assaults. Zelenskyy noted that these systems were not initially supplied in sufficient quantities, and the ongoing Iran war could further diminish the available supply for Ukraine.
The Mideast conflict, now in its sixth week, has sent shockwaves through the global economy, straining limited resources and potentially leaving Ukrainian cities more vulnerable. For Kyiv, a key objective is to weaken Moscow's economy, but surging oil prices, partly driven by the Iran war, are boosting Russia's oil revenues and its capacity to sustain its military operations.
In response to the economic benefits Russia gains from the Mideast war, Ukraine has intensified its long-range drone attacks on Russian oil facilities. Zelenskyy suggested sharing Ukraine's expertise in countering Iranian drone technology with Gulf Arab nations, hoping they could assist Ukraine with anti-ballistic missiles.
Zelenskyy also proposed positioning Ukraine as a partner in safeguarding global trade routes, drawing on its experience in securing maritime corridors in the Black Sea. He was in Istanbul for discussions with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, touching on peace talks and potential new defense deals between Turkey and Ukraine.
