Ilkeston Town Hall proudly displays a newly completed mural honoring Donald Rose, a distinguished World War Two veteran who lived to 110 years old. Rose, who served as a sniper and survived combat during the D-Day landings, also played a role in the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp and fought in North Africa and Italy. This seven-meter artwork by Neil Keating and John Culshaw features Rose in his youth and later years, alongside symbolic imagery of his wartime experiences.
The mural's unveiling ahead of the 774th Ilkeston Charter Fair aims to promote remembrance and celebrate Rose's remarkable service. Erewash Borough Council funded the project as part of a wider initiative to enhance the town's environment. Councillor Mark Alfrey highlighted the artwork's role in appreciating local history and attracting visitors, noting its positive impact on the town centre's appearance and community pride. Rose had previously received the Freedom of the Borough and the French Legion of Honour for his service.
