USS Ford Suffers Laundry Fire, Heading for Croatia
31 Mar
Summary
- USS Gerald R. Ford carrier sustained a laundry fire.
- Repairs may take 12 to 14 months in Croatia.
- Ship faced multiple issues including faulty toilets.

The nuclear-powered USS Gerald R. Ford, the United States Navy's most advanced aircraft carrier, is currently in Split, Croatia, for repairs and maintenance estimated to take between 12 and 14 months. The supercarrier, which cost $13.2 billion, experienced a significant fire originating in its main laundry spaces on March 12 while in the Red Sea.
This incident occurred during an extended deployment exceeding 260 days. The fire reportedly burned for approximately 30 hours, leading to speculation about the effectiveness of the ship's sophisticated firefighting systems. Over 600 sailors lost their bunks due to the fire, and laundry services were disrupted.
Beyond the recent fire, the Ford has a history of technical issues, notably a persistent faulty toilet system involving an eco-toilet VCHT system that causes clogs and fecal overflows. This system requires extensive daily maintenance and incurs significant costs when needing an 'acid flush'.
The prolonged out-of-commission period for the Ford is expected to strain US strike groups, potentially leading to longer deployments for older Nimitz-class carriers. The issues with the Ford-class may also delay the decommissioning of existing Nimitz-class ships.
