Ukrainian Artists Transform Conflict into Powerful Art
29 May
Summary
- War's trauma inspires Ukrainian artists to create anew.
- Artists use diverse mediums to process war and displacement.
- Art scene thrives internationally despite ongoing conflict.

The full-scale Russian invasion has profoundly impacted Ukraine's art scene, compelling many artists to turn their creative focus to processing the trauma of war. Initially hesitant, artists like Olena Kharakhulakh decided to pursue art full-time after witnessing the devastating effects of missile strikes. Her current works feature classical statues with altered faces, symbolizing personal transformation.
Other artists, such as Vlada Lobus, were displaced by the conflict and used art, including photography and painting, to cope with shock and displacement. Despite the war claiming the lives of hundreds of artists, the scene remains vibrant. Anna Avetova, director of Art Kyiv, notes that the invasion has boosted international recognition for Ukrainian artists and galleries, even as the war's direct theme recedes from some works.
Artists like Iuliia Shulga, who works in human resources, use collage to "glue" their fragmented lives back together, viewing it as an honest medium for current realities. Similarly, Irina Cheremisina turned to photography after losing her father, job, and home, finding it essential for survival. Though her work has been shown internationally, her priority remains exhibiting in Ukraine, as a way to leave a part of herself behind and encourage others to endure.
