Ukraine Amputee Reclaims Life After Devastating Attack

Iryna Nakonechna, a 50-year-old woman from Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, is navigating a profound reinvention after a Russian missile attack on March 5, 2025, claimed her left leg and her husband, Serhii Nakonechnyi. The devastating strike also left her with limited mobility in her arms, forcing a difficult acceptance of her injuries.

To cope with the physical and emotional toll, Nakonechna shed much of her former identity, cutting her hair and removing personal belongings. She is now undergoing intensive rehabilitation to gain confidence and mobility with her prosthetic. Her physical therapist, Anastasiia Stetsenko, guides her through challenging exercises.

Nakonechna has found a unique way to channel her resilience: knitting small toy capybaras. These toys have become an unofficial symbol among amputees in Ukraine, representing survival and the pursuit of joy amidst devastation. Through her meticulous craft, Nakonechna focuses on the stitches, leaving behind thoughts of what could have been.

Recently, Nakonechna marked a significant personal victory by wearing shorts for the first time since her injury, a powerful step towards self-acceptance. She has invited her mother to live with her and continues to find meaning in her new life, embracing herself as she is.
