Sonia Kumar, a Labour MP and practicing NHS physiotherapist, has spearheaded an unprecedented training initiative in Ukraine. Following a September visit that deeply moved her with the resilience of injured soldiers, Kumar organized a trip to equip Ukrainian clinicians with vital skills. This effort focused on managing the complex and urgent injuries faced by those on the front lines, aiming to enable quicker recovery and pain management.
The training, which involved 25 Ukrainian clinicians, took place at the Institute of Vertebrology and Rehabilitation in Kyiv. It was conducted in partnership with the Patients of Ukraine Charitable Foundation. Kumar highlighted that Ukrainian healthcare professionals expressed a strong need for practical support and skills, rather than just sympathy. She conveyed that their priority is to improve rehabilitation services, a critical area given the vast number of war-related injuries.
This visit also served to explore avenues for further UK support to Ukrainian health professionals. The initiative represents a significant step towards establishing a long-term partnership between British and Ukrainian healthcare teams. Ukraine's Deputy Minister of Health, Yevheniy Honchar, lauded the collaboration, emphasizing its importance in enhancing the skills and knowledge of medical experts within the country.
