Tripura Unrest: Communal Clashes Erupt Over Fair Fees
12 Jan
Summary
- Communal clashes in Tripura's Unakoti district injured several people.
- Internet services suspended for 48 hours to curb misinformation spread.
- Prohibitory orders imposed and security forces deployed to restore order.

Communal violence broke out in Kumarghat subdivision of Tripura's Unakoti district on Saturday, resulting in injuries to at least five to six individuals and the gutting of several houses. The unrest was triggered by a dispute over subscription collection for a local fair in the Shimultala area.
In response to the escalating tension and to prevent further escalation, prohibitory orders were imposed, and a large contingent of security forces was deployed. Internet services across the Kumarghat Sub-Division were suspended for 48 hours as a precautionary measure to control the law-and-order situation by restricting the spread of false propaganda.
Authorities, including the Superintendent of Police and District Magistrate, rushed to the affected areas to review security arrangements. While the situation is reported to be under control, police and paramilitary forces continue to conduct flag marches, and the public has been urged to maintain peace and refrain from spreading rumors.
