Mid East Airspace Shut: Thousands Stranded
4 Mar
Summary
- Tens of thousands of travelers are stranded due to airspace closures.
- Germany is organizing evacuation flights for its nationals.
- Limited flight operations have cautiously resumed in the UAE.

Tens of thousands of travelers have been stranded in the Middle East since the weekend, prompting urgent evacuation efforts. Widespread airspace closures, initiated following retaliatory attacks by Iran, have grounded flights and left tourists and cruise ship passengers unable to return home.
The German government has organized its first evacuation flight, scheduled to depart from Muscat, Oman, early on Thursday. This flight, operated by Lufthansa, has a capacity of 279 passengers and aims to repatriate vulnerable German nationals, including pregnant women, children, and those with health issues.
Figures from the German Travel Association indicate approximately 30,000 customers of German tour operators are affected. While some limited flight operations have resumed in the United Arab Emirates, the overall situation across the region remains volatile.
