A significant Flag Day ceremony will be held at VFW Post 2391 in St. Augustine on Sunday, June 14, from 1 to 3 p.m. This event will uniquely retire American flags representing all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Event organizer Rick McAllister described the ceremony as a kickoff for the upcoming 250th birthday of the United States on July 4.
During the ceremony, 51 guests will present a flag to the First City Honor Guard for retirement with honor and dignity. The flags will be retired in order of their state adoption, with Florida's flag being the first. Attendees will also have the opportunity to view historic and commemorative flags, and Lt. Gov. Jay Collins will be the guest of honor and keynote speaker.
The First City Honor Guard, rebuilt over the past four years, provides military honors, represents veterans at events, and retires worn flags. Their monthly flag retirements are supported by the St. Johns County Recycling Department's American Flag Rescue Project. This partnership places flag drop-off boxes in various public locations across the county, facilitating the collection and retirement of thousands of flags annually.
