Migrant Crisis Flares: Tens of Thousands Displaced

An emergency humanitarian response has been initiated by Doctors Without Borders (MSF) following a significant increase in anti-migrant violence in South Africa. This surge in unrest has led to the displacement of tens of thousands of individuals, alongside reported deaths and injuries. The violence intensified after anti-migrant groups issued a deadline for undocumented migrants to leave the country.

MSF has reported that the impacts extend beyond undocumented migrants, with refugees, asylum seekers, and documented foreign nationals also facing threats and assaults. Foreigners from countries including Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, and Ghana have been forced to flee their homes, seeking refuge in various temporary safe havens.

The medical charity has deployed emergency teams to key provinces and border towns to provide critical primary healthcare, first aid, mental health support, and treatment for chronic illnesses. Many displaced individuals fled without essential medications or medical records, raising serious concerns about the continuity of care for patients with conditions like HIV, tuberculosis, and diabetes.
