A contingent of five firefighters from Shropshire is preparing for a significant journey to the United States. They are set to participate in a memorial stair climb in Atlanta, Georgia, marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
This dedicated team will join 343 firefighters from across the UK and Ireland. Their mission is to commemorate the 343 New York firefighters who tragically lost their lives while responding to the events of September 11, 2001. Each firefighter will climb 110 floors, mirroring the height of the World Trade Center.
To prepare for this solemn event and to support charitable causes, the Shropshire team recently undertook a demanding 24-hour stair climbing challenge at Anytime Fitness in Telford. This effort successfully raised more than £1,000 for the Fire Fighters Charity, the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund, and the Blue Light Card Foundation.
During the Atlanta climb, each firefighter will carry a lanyard bearing the name and photograph of one of the individuals who died. This deeply personal tribute aims to ensure that the sacrifices made are remembered with individual respect and empathy, fostering a strong connection to the fallen heroes.
