Shawnee Township celebrated the dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony for its newly constructed Veterans and First Responders Memorial on Saturday morning. This event coincided with the nation's 250th Independence Day celebration.
The memorial stands as a lasting tribute, ensuring that the sacrifices made by veterans, police officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel are permanently honored and remembered by the community. Shawnee Cemetery Sexton Lesa Wende emphasized the significance of the space for those who defended freedom and the community.
Funding for the memorial was exclusively managed by the Chained Eagles of Ohio, a Lima-based nonprofit established in 2009. The organization is dedicated to honoring American prisoners of war and missing in action personnel.
During the ceremony, the Chained Eagles' traveling memorial, the "Ohio Wall," was displayed. This wall lists all Ohio servicemembers still listed as prisoners of war or missing in action, a cause close to the organization's mission. Treasurer Tom Vernon highlighted the ongoing commitment to not forget the more than 83,000 servicemembers who have not returned from overseas duty.
