The historic room where freedom fighter Shivaram Hari Rajguru was born has undergone extensive restoration and is scheduled to reopen on March 23, coinciding with Shaheed Diwas. Located in Rajgurunagar, near Pune, the approximately 200 sq ft structure had been closed for nearly a year due to urgent repairs.
Conservation efforts were initiated in 2025 by the state archaeological department after the building showed signs of severe deterioration. A critical issue was a significant crack in the main wall adjacent to the Bhima river, which had led to water seepage, threatening the room and its preserved artefacts. The roof's wooden supports also needed replacement due to age and moisture.
To ensure authenticity, a private conservation agency meticulously studied archival photographs and historical references. The restoration involved repairing the damaged wall, replacing the roof with reinforced structures, and preserving the original architectural character. Alongside the birth room, a Ram temple on the premises has also been renovated and is nearing completion.
The Rajguru memorial complex is a significant pilgrimage site for students, historians, and admirers. Its reopening on Shaheed Diwas is anticipated to draw large crowds paying tribute to Rajguru and other martyrs of India's freedom struggle.
