As the United States prepares for its 250th anniversary, Ohio is undertaking a significant project to identify and honor Revolutionary War soldiers buried within the state. Historians estimate that around 7,000 Revolutionary War veterans settled in Ohio, drawn by land grants offered after the war. The Ohio History Connection, in partnership with America250-Ohio, has launched the Revolutionary War Veterans Graves Project to locate these heroes' burial sites.
The project is actively seeking public assistance to document these graves before Memorial Day. Residents can utilize the Survey123 app on their mobile devices to search cemeteries and submit information on potential veteran graves, including names and dates. This initiative aims to gather accurate data to potentially restore or create new historical markers for these long-forgotten individuals.
To date, the public has documented over 4,100 soldiers across Ohio. While the exact target of 7,000 may be challenging due to missing grave sites, the project is making significant progress. Cemeteries like Green Lawn in Columbus are also participating, contributing to the collective effort to honor these early Ohioans.
