Nigeria Sends 86 Peacekeepers Amidst Domestic Security Woes

Nigeria recently announced the deployment of 86 soldiers to Guinea Bissau for a peacekeeping mission coordinated by ECOWAS. This move has sparked debate, with some citizens criticizing the decision given Nigeria's ongoing internal security challenges.

Historically, Nigeria has been a significant contributor to international peacekeeping efforts under the UN, African Union, and ECOWAS, participating in over 50 missions worldwide. Experts suggest these operations offer substantial benefits, including financial reimbursements from the UN and increased diplomatic leverage.

Group Captain Sadiq Garba (Retd), a security analyst, highlighted that peacekeeping has been a global practice since 1945. He explained that UN-mandated missions provide financial returns, with the UN often reimbursing countries for expenses incurred. However, this financial support is contingent on meeting strict requirements for troop and equipment standards, which are not always met by Nigerian contingents.

Furthermore, Nigeria's consistent participation has elevated its standing within international bodies. The country has often led UN peacekeeping commissions since 1967, enhancing its global image and influence, particularly in security matters. This role bolsters Nigeria's voice in international forums like the UN and ECOWAS.

These peacekeeping efforts also strengthen Nigeria's influence within ECOWAS, positioning it as a key player in West African security. This is particularly relevant given Nigeria's historical role in stabilizing the region, including a previous troop deployment to Guinea Bissau last year when its government faced a coup attempt.
