Myanmar Military Cracks Down on Border Scam Operations

Myanmar's protracted civil war has become intertwined with a burgeoning scam crisis, prompting a notable shift in the military junta's strategy. Facing pressure from international partners, particularly China, the junta has recently launched raids on major scam compounds in Karen State, including the notorious KK Park. This crackdown involved seizing electronic devices and demolishing structures, marking a departure from years of complicity where military-aligned groups reportedly profited from these illicit operations.

These operations, while targeting online fraud schemes that have defrauded victims globally of billions, appear to be a response to mounting international pressure. China, a key ally, has been urging Myanmar to address the issue, partly due to its own citizens falling victim to both scams and trafficking within these compounds.
