European defense manufacturer MBDA is set to unveil a new interceptor system. This system is specifically designed to counter attacks involving a high volume of low-cost munitions, such as drones. The new interceptor, named the Counter Mass Interceptor, aims to provide European militaries and NATO forces with a sovereign solution against saturation attacks. The system is expected to be available as early as 2028 and is being developed with a focus on large-scale manufacturing, drawing parallels to the automotive industry model.
This initial interceptor will target smaller drones and is planned to be followed by a second, longer-range version. The future interceptor will be capable of engaging a wider array of threats, including drones, rockets, gliding bombs, and subsonic missiles, while also operating in all weather conditions. Development is currently led by MBDA's British teams, with potential future iterations led by their French counterparts.
