Since 2016, the "Manion WOD" has evolved from a singular tribute to 1st Lt. Travis Manion into a significant national event. This CrossFit-style workout, designed to be exceptionally rigorous, draws thousands of participants to hundreds of gyms annually.
The demanding seven-round structure, featuring 400-meter runs and 29 back squats, is deliberately challenging. Travis Manion's sister, Ryan, emphasizes that the workout's intensity mirrors the profound sacrifices made by service members in defense of freedom. Participants are encouraged to push their limits and reflect on these contributions.
Originally from the United States Naval Academy, Travis Manion was killed in Iraq in 2007 while aiding wounded comrades. The workout's design, focusing on leg strength, reflects his background as a wrestler. This year's event added a personal touch with participants listening to music from Travis's own iPod from his final deployment.
Beyond the physical challenge, the Manion WOD fosters community among veterans, families, and civilians. Ryan Manion highlights its role in supporting veterans transitioning to civilian life, addressing issues like mental health and the veteran suicide epidemic through initiatives like the Travis Manion Foundation.
