India Warships Bolster Gulf Presence Amid Strait Tensions
19 Mar
Summary
- Indian warships increased to seven in the region east of the Strait of Hormuz.
- Operation Sankalp aims to reassure vessels transiting the Persian Gulf.
- Twenty-two India-flagged vessels are currently stuck west of the strait.

India has augmented its naval deployment in the broader region east of the Strait of Hormuz, bringing the total number of warships to six or seven. This increased presence is part of ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of Indian maritime interests.
Operation Sankalp, initiated in 2019, continues to be the framework for this deployment. It was established to reassure India-flagged vessels navigating the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, following earlier maritime security incidents. Currently, three Indian warships are positioned in the Gulf of Oman, providing protection for passing vessels.
The situation has seen several India-flagged ships successfully transit the Strait of Hormuz, including two LPG carriers that recently arrived in Indian ports. However, twenty-two India-flagged vessels remain stuck west of the critical strait, highlighting the ongoing challenges for maritime trade in the region.
