IAEA Warns of Nuclear Disaster in Iran Conflict
2 Mar
Summary
- IAEA chief fears radiological release with serious consequences.
- Leak could force evacuations larger than major cities.
- Iran's peaceful nuclear facilities were attacked again.

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi has expressed grave concern regarding the intensifying conflict in the Middle East. Speaking at a meeting of the 35-nation Board of Governors, Grossi warned that the risk of a radiological leak cannot be dismissed. He cautioned that such an event could lead to serious consequences, potentially requiring the evacuation of areas comparable to or larger than major cities.
The agency confirmed it possesses detailed information on the location of nuclear materials throughout the region and is prepared to offer technical assistance if a crisis occurs. While the IAEA continues to monitor the situation, Grossi emphasized the urgent need for restraint to prevent any impact on nuclear safety.
This warning follows conflicting reports regarding the status of nuclear infrastructure. Iranian Ambassador Reza Najafi recently alleged that the Natanz facility was targeted in military strikes. However, Grossi stated that the agency currently has no confirmed evidence that any nuclear installations have been damaged. Despite the lack of immediate signs of a leak, the IAEA remains on high alert.
