Germany Nabs Suspect in Forest Arms Stash

Authorities in Romania are holding a suspect linked to weapons found hidden in a German forest, according to Germany's interior minister. The individual is believed to be a "low-level agent" allegedly preparing attacks. This suspect is reportedly one of two young Ukrainian men arrested in Romania last October.

These two men were accused of planning a parcel bomb attack, intended for Russia. Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, both Germany and Romania have experienced an increase in alleged Russian espionage and sabotage operations. German prosecutors are investigating the suspect for attack preparations and suspected espionage.

German officials suggest Russia recruits "disposable agents" paid small sums for sabotage and espionage. The two Ukrainian men, apprehended in Bucharest, had deposited parcel devices with a courier company, which were subsequently defused. The Romanian Intelligence Service stated it foiled a Russian-orchestrated sabotage operation targeting European countries.

This incident follows other recent security concerns in Germany, including an explosive-laden drone found at Leipzig airport. German intelligence has warned of potential Russian attacks on defense industry figures and supporters of Ukraine.
