Eva Schloss, an Auschwitz survivor and the stepsister of Anne Frank, has died at the age of 96. She passed away peacefully in London on January 3, 2026. Her death marks the loss of a significant eyewitness to the Nazi death camps and a dedicated campaigner against intolerance.
King Charles III paid tribute to her 'courageous' and 'resilient' spirit, highlighting her lifelong commitment to promoting kindness and understanding through her work with the Anne Frank Trust UK and global Holocaust education initiatives. Schloss, born in Vienna in 1929, fled Austria in 1938 and later went into hiding in Amsterdam with her family.
Her family was deported to Auschwitz in 1944, where she and her mother survived, while her father and brother perished. After liberation, she met Otto Frank, Anne's father, who became her stepfather. Schloss initially remained silent about her experiences for decades but began speaking out in 1988, driven by the continued existence of war and persecution, dedicating her later years to educating others.
