6 Mar
Summary
- A drone attack targeted an oilfield operated by HKN Energy in Iraq's Kurdistan region.
- The Sarsang field, producing 30,000 barrels daily, experienced a fire and halted production.
- Kurdish officials suspect Iran-aligned militias of carrying out the attack.

On Thursday, a drone attack targeted the Sarsang oilfield in Iraq's Kurdistan region, operated by the U.S. firm HKN Energy. The strike resulted in a fire and immediate cessation of oil production.
The field, which normally produces about 30,000 barrels of oil daily, experienced an explosion at its power unit. Production was halted as a precautionary measure following the incident.
While no group has claimed responsibility, Kurdish officials have pointed to Iraqi militias aligned with Iran. This potential escalation means targets may now include U.S. energy interests, expanding beyond U.S. military bases in the region.
Authorities confirmed the attack was carried out by two drones. Some energy companies in Iraqi Kurdistan have paused operations as a safeguard, especially following recent strikes involving the United States and Israel.
