Tony Winterburn, a World War Two veteran and D-Day officer, has passed away at the age of 100. He joined the Merchant Navy as a radio officer in 1942 at just 16 years old.
During the war, Winterburn's service included participating in the dangerous Arctic convoys in 1943, which transported vital aid to Russia. He later served aboard the SS Stanridge, helping to transport 600 troops and landing craft to Gold Beach for the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944.
Winterburn's wartime bravery earned him France's National Order of the Legion of Honour and an Arctic Star medal. He also received a commemorative medal marking the 80th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War.
Beyond his military service, Winterburn was a dedicated member of his local community in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset. He served as a Somerset County Councillor and was a trustee for BARB Search & Rescue and Burnham RNLI, leaving a legacy of commitment and respect.
