An unexpected discovery has been made at Scarborough Castle, where archaeologists uncovered a sealed Cold War bunker. This relic from a past era, intended for the Royal Observer Corps, was located by English Heritage experts after being presumed lost for decades.
The small bunker, measuring approximately 15 feet 6 inches by 7 feet 6 inches, was decommissioned and sealed in 1968. It served as a lookout post for volunteers who would monitor nuclear activity in the event of war. Britain once had around 1,500 such posts, highlighting a little-known network from the Cold War.
Despite its strategic position on a headland with a long history of use, the bunker's presence within a medieval castle site was surprising. Researchers located it using ground-penetrating radar, finding that it is currently flooded with about six feet of water. Future plans aim to safely open it for exploration.
