A significant tribute is now underway for the Royal Navy's Coastal Forces, an often-overlooked division that played a crucial role in defending the United Kingdom during both World War One and World War Two. This pioneering monument aims to recognize their brave service.
The planned sculpture will be an impressive 13.1ft (4m) high, featuring the hull of a motor gun boat with two figures aboard. The design is the creation of Andover-based artist Amy Goodman, known for her previous public artworks.
This commemorative piece will be strategically placed at the entrance to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, a location steeped in maritime history and adjacent to the historic ship HMS Warrior. Richard Farrington, a trustee at the Coastal Forces Heritage Trust, expressed enthusiasm, describing the anticipated final result as 'fabulous.'
