Chennai Road Renamed for Fallen Hero

A major thoroughfare in Chennai is being renamed to commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of Ashoka Chakra awardee Major Mukund Varadharajan. The nearly 15-kilometer road stretching from East Tambaram to Velachery will now be known as 'Major Mukund Varadharajan Road'. The Tambaram City Municipal Corporation Council officially passed a resolution approving this significant change. This decision followed a proposal initiated by the Director of Municipal Administration in August 2025, with subsequent permission granted by the State Government on October 23, 2025. Major Varadharajan, a native of Tamil Nadu, made the supreme sacrifice in 2014 during a counter-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir. His valor earned him a posthumous Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award. The initiative to rename the road highlights the community's respect for his service and memory.
