YouTube is currently testing a new direct messaging (DM) feature within its mobile application, a move designed to streamline the process of sharing videos with friends and family. This functionality is already live in numerous countries and is set to begin a trial period in the United States this week. The feature will be accessible to users who are 18 years of age or older and logged into their YouTube accounts.
Users eligible for the trial can share videos by tapping the share button and selecting a contact. If the recipient is not a YouTube user, an invite can be sent via other messaging applications. A dedicated 'Messages' tab will appear for eligible users, enabling them to send invite links. As with other social platforms, recipients can choose to accept or decline these messages. This initiative echoes YouTube's goal to provide a unified sharing experience for its community, encompassing music videos, tutorials, and Shorts.
This is not YouTube's first foray into in-app chat features; a similar function was introduced in 2017 but later discontinued in 2019. The reintroduction of this feature aligns with the growing trend of sharing short-form video content across social media. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have successfully leveraged this for engagement, and YouTube anticipates similar benefits. Spotify also integrated direct messaging last year. The company has not indicated that YouTube Premium is required for this feature, suggesting it might be available to all users.
