Google Unlocks YouTube Picture-in-Picture for Everyone
30 Apr
Summary
- YouTube's picture-in-picture mode is now available to free users globally.
- The feature is restricted to longform, non-music content on Android and iOS.
- This update should automatically activate for users as it rolls out globally.

Google is expanding YouTube's picture-in-picture (PiP) mode to all users globally, a feature previously exclusive to Premium subscribers. This convenient functionality, which allows videos to play in a small window while multitasking on a device, is now becoming available to free users worldwide.
The PiP mode is specifically designated for "longform, non-music content" on both Android and iOS platforms. Google has not specified exact definitions for "longform" or any minimum duration requirements, but YouTube Shorts will not be included. The restriction on music content aims to prevent its misuse for background listening, a feature that remains exclusive to full YouTube Premium subscribers.
This significant update is currently in the process of rolling out globally and is expected to be fully implemented over the next few months. Users will not need to manually activate the feature; it should become available automatically once the rollout reaches their device. To use PiP, users simply navigate to their home screen while a video is playing, and a mini-player will appear, which can be repositioned and controlled.
Premium Lite subscribers also receive picture-in-picture access, with the same music exclusion. The availability of this feature to free users offers a substantial benefit, especially considering the monthly costs of YouTube Premium ($16) and Premium Lite ($9), making it a valuable perk for many mobile users.
