YouTube Raises Creator Monetization Hurdles
11 Aug
Summary
- Creators now need 8,000 watch hours or 20 million Shorts views.
- New monetization thresholds take effect February 1.
- Premium Lite subscription expands globally to all countries.

Effective February 1, YouTube has implemented stricter criteria for creators seeking to monetize their content through ads and subscriptions. New creators must now achieve at least 8,000 qualified watch hours within the past year or accumulate 20 million qualified Shorts views over the last 90 days. These updated thresholds represent a substantial increase from the previous requirements.
The platform, owned by Google, stated that these adjustments are intended to keep pace with YouTube's rapid expansion, which now boasts over 200 billion daily Shorts views and more than a billion hours of daily watch time on TV. Notably, these changes will not impact creators already established within the YouTube Partner Program.
Furthermore, the company is expanding its Premium Lite subscription service, which offers an ad-free viewing experience, to all countries where YouTube Premium is available. This move aims to enhance creator earnings, as partners receive a share of subscription revenue based on viewer engagement and watch time.
These revised monetization policies, particularly for Shorts creators, signal a greater emphasis on audience engagement and consistent viewership before creators can earn revenue. This could potentially lead to a more competitive environment for new content creators on the platform. Rival platforms like X and Facebook have also recently updated their creator reward programs.
