Experts Urge YouTube to Ban AI "Slop" for Children

Child development specialists and advocacy groups have formally requested that Google prohibit AI-generated videos from being recommended to children on YouTube and YouTube Kids. A letter sent on Wednesday to Google CEO Sundar Pichai and YouTube CEO Neal Mohan by over 200 signatories expressed significant concerns regarding the perceived low quality and educational value of AI-created content. These experts worry that the proliferation of such material, sometimes referred to as "AI slop," could negatively impact children's attention spans and their ability to distinguish between real and artificial content.

The group argues that increased screen time with AI-generated videos displaces essential real-world interactions vital for emotional and social development. They assert that YouTube is conducting an "uncontrolled experiment" by promoting this content without proven benefits and in violation of child development principles. Notable signatories include social psychologist Jonathan Haidt and organizations like Fairplay and the American Federation of Teachers. While YouTube has stated that managing "AI slop" is a priority, it also maintains that not all AI-generated content is detrimental.
